How Much Have You Been on Your Device Lately?

Everybody watches TV, plays video games, or texts at some point in the day. But what plenty of people don’t notice is that they are always spending a lot more time on their device than they intended, or they don’t realise how much time they have actually been playing Fortnite.

Take this quick and easy quiz to find out how much time you were sucked into your hypnotising screen…

First, read these simple instructions: Get out a fresh, white piece of paper and a sharpened pencil. Divide the page into four columns. Label the first column “One”, label the second column “Two”, the third column “Three”, and of course the fourth column “Four”. Every time you get a 1,2,3 or 4, place a checkmark in the corresponding column. If the question says “Choose all that apply”, place a checkmark in all of the columns that apply. Easy.

Go.

What devices to you have? (Choose all that apply).

  1. Your parents (or maybe your) TV.
  2. iPhone or iPod touch.
  3. Playstation or Xbox.
  4. Tablet (this includes iPads).

How long do you think you are watching TV, playing video games or on your other screens per day, on average? Answer honestly, or your results won’t be accurate.

  1. Less than 20 minutes
  2. 20 minutes – 2 hours
  3. 2 hours – 4 hours
  4. 4+ hours

Where do you usually keep your device at night?

  1. I’m not really sure.
  2. In another room.
  3. Charging just on the other side of the room.
  4. On my nightstand. I should keep it close to me.

How do you prefer to communicate to people?

  1. Definitely face-to-face. It’s better to see their expressions, and emojis never do the trick.
  2. I prefer to FaceTime/Skype them or talk face to face. I don’t really care though.
  3. Calling is best.
  4. I like to text. We don’t live in the 1800s anymore!

You are going on a long car ride. What do you bring for entertainment?

  1. A book, word search, toys, and maybe some paper for doodling.
  2. The family iPad.
  3. My phone or other device.
  4. Two or three devices. What would happen if one of them died? I need a spare!

Do you think you could live without your device?

  1. Absolutely.
  2. Maybe for a month or so.
  3. Probably for a few days, but I wouldn’t do so well without it for longer.
  4. Nope.

If you got:

Mostly 1’s…

You are coping well with living in the modern society of computers, iPhones and other crazy gadgets. Just remember that it is OK to spend some time on your device or watching TV!

Mostly 2’s…

You have found the happy medium of device time! You don’t spend too much, but you don’t spend too little. Good job!

Mostly 3’s…

You are not completely addicted to screens yet, you can still be saved! You spend a little more than necessary time watching TV, playing games on an iPad, or doing anything else on a screen. There is room for improvement, but don’t worry, you aren’t the worst addict we’ve seen.

Mostly 4’s…

You use devices way more than necessary. You should probably start working on doing other things than staring at a screen. Read a book, play a game, have a friend over, and start to only use your phone, iPad, TV or other device once a day.
